I was raised in a family with a mom and a dad, just as most families
used to be. I was raised in a Christian home, and like most homes, our
family was a little strange at times. I remember learning to read in school
and coming home and reading a Dick and Jane book to my dad. In the
book, Dick and Jane called their mom, Mother, and their dad, Father. I
asked my dad about calling him Father.
My dad took me into his lap and held me close, he said, "I am your dad,
we, in this family only have one Father, and He lives in Heaven." So my
dad was always dad, but I also remember the look in my dad's eyes as
He told me about Our Father.
My dad's eyes would midst over, whenever he talked about God and
this country that he loved and had fought for in the Korean War. My dad
taught me to see things, to look at things, with the eyes of God. My dad
would help perfect strangers, pick up hitch hikers, do whatever he could
for people, but my dad also never missed a chance to bring God into a
conversation. My dad has been in Heaven, for a while now, but he
live on in me, and I want to pass those lessons on to others.
I am sure that is why, I find it easy to relate to people, no matter the
circumstance. I've been able to witness to people on the streets, under
bridges, and where ever I may find them. I have been able to hug and
pray with people, that haven't had baths in weeks. When I was driving
truck, before my injuries, if I had extra shower points on my fuel cards,
I would take them into the truck stop and get them a shower. It was
always nice to hear them talk about how normal they felt after a shower.
My dad taught me how to look at people, with the compassion of
Christ. I could look past where they are in life, to where they could be
in life. People are just people, no matter whether they are on the streets,
in recovery facilities, in homeless shelters, or just having trouble at
home. We can see this in the New Testament, and the way Jesus treated
harlots, lepers, beggars, and the street people of His day.
Jesus knew that His Father created everyone, regardless of their present
situation or circumstance. Jesus showed us how to look at people with the
eyes of God. Isn't that what we want people to see, every time we get
face to face with them. We don't want them to see us, with all our faults
and short comings, we want them to see Jesus in us. We want them to
look into our eyes, and see Our Father's Eyes,
Eyes full of compassion, able to feel and relate to their pain. Eyes that
bring hope to the hopeless, truth to those that are seeking an answer to
life, that can only be found in Jesus Christ. People should see the love
of God in our eyes, not pity. People should look at us and see Jesus,
because for some, we are the only Jesus, they will ever see.
