He didn't make it a choice, that would be easy, He made it a
command.
The Ten Commandments in The Old Testament are about loving
God and loving others. These same principles are laid out for us ,
again in The New Testament, when Jesus tells us to, love God and
love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
Our biggest stumbling block, when it comes to love, is learning
to love the person we see in the mirror. The depth of our love, is
based on how much we love ourselves.
We see this struggle to love ourselves, everywhere. We read
articles about it, self-help books about it, newscasts, movies, TV
programs, they may talk about how we treat others, but these are
all reflections of, how much we love ourselves.
There are a lot of things that we do to try and love ourselves,
plastic surgery, drugs, alcohol, co-dependency, re-hab facilities,
mental facilities, etc. We spend millions of dollars, to help us love
that person in the mirror.
What we learn, is that loving ourselves, affects how we love
others.
If I don't care about my life, then I care even less about yours.
If I can think about killing me, I can kill you.
If I can destroy my body, why should I care if you destroy yours.
God wants us to love ourselves. He created and designed, each
of us uniquely, for His Devine purpose. I may be able to reach
someone, that no one else can reach. I may be able to love some
one that no one else can love.
Self-love gives me the freedom to love others. If I can love me,
then I can better understand, how much My Creator loves me. I
can always come to God, just as I am.
Self-love allows me to function in life, regardless of what has
happened in my past. Self-love allows me to love you, not based
on your feelings towards me, but based on the depths of my love.
When we begin to understand and love ourselves, we open up
and allow God's Love to reflect all around us.
