In Matthew 26:11 as Jesus is talking to His disciples, Jesus said, "...You
will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me...."
This scene in Matthew takes place when a woman pours precious and
expensive oils on the feet of the Master and rubs Jesus' feet her hair. The
disciples are questioning whether it would have been better spent on the
poor.
Society has always had varying degrees of wealth, from the very rich
to the very poor. Every word that came out of Jesus mouth, was not spoken
just to those around Him, but was spoken for the benefit of all who would
follow Him. The poor, the outcasts, the homeless, will always be with us.
Jesus has told us in many places how to help the poor. We can, feed them,
clothe them, give them water, visit them and be an active part of their lives.
In fact, Jesus by example, walked among them and ministered to them
continuously.
Society has always been embarrassed by those that are less fortunate, we
see this with laws passed to keep the homeless and poor away from business
areas, Why? Because it makes the ""clientele" uncomfortable. Let's be honest,
poverty makes all of us uncomfortable.
We will never be able to stop poverty, in this life, but we can make it more
bearable for those that are less fortunate than us. The easy way, is to give
our used clothing, shoes, furniture... to charities and let them deal with
those that are poor and less fortunate. These non-profits are always in need
of gifts, just be sure that you take the time and check out the non-profit
that you give to. My wife and I like to give to our local non-profits, like
The Hope Center, here in Bakersfield, Ca. where we live. There is less
overhead than you have with big national or inter-national organizations.
There is also a "local face" that will be there long after your personal
crisis is over. That way it is easier for those that are helped, to "pay it
forward" as those that are helped learn to help others.
