The first day of April has always been a day of practical jokes, puns
and foolishness. In other words, my kind of day! I have always been the
one with a quick wit and a smart mouth, and have gotten in trouble for
it numerous times. My mouth goes in gear, before my brain does
sometimes.
This is OK when your out with friends and loved ones that know you,
but can be hurtful to others because of careless words. Luckily for me, I
have become more adept at catching my tongue as I have gotten older. I
would say more mature, but my friends and family would question that
remark, so I'll just stick with older, it's safer.
These words that we use have the power to help, as well as hurt others.
James talks about "bridling the tongue" as a control mechanism of our
speech.
Jesus during the "Sermon on the Mount" talked about being meek.
Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, defines meekness as strength
and courage under control. I always think of horses or elephants when
I think of meekness. A bridal or harness can keep a Clydesdale or an
elephant under control, if the animal will give up control. The difficult
balance is to keep the spirit, courage and strength active but under the
direction of the one holding the reins.
This same use of meekness could be used with our first responders and
military personnel. People that are willing to put their lives on the line,
while under he control of their superiors. Our modern society has re-
written this definition into a weakness, a fault. A human doormat, if you
will, but clearly Jesus wants people with the courage to stand up for
His cause.
We are called to willingly accept the bridling of our tongue and come
under the control of Jesus Christ. This has to be a conscious act on our
part. We choose to submit to Jesus Christ, he will never force us, but
He will lead us, if we let Him.
During this month of April, be careful with your words.Your words
can hurt, destroy, cut, wound, and kill another person emotionally and
spiritually. To do so, shows the foolishness of mankind.
My friends, during this month of April, lets lift others up, be encouraging,
pray for each other, listen to the hurts of others, be a friend to all you meet,
witness for the Lord every day, and most importantly, be meek and allow
God to have control so that, He can use you and I to bless others.
