Addiction

Addiction is a problem for about 40,000,000 Americans. Sometimes the
addiction is physical, sometimes it's a mental addiction and sometimes it affects
both the mind and body. If you are prone to addiction, it is easy to isolate yourself
in your addiction. In isolation, is where we are most susceptible to spinning out of
control in our addiction.
The big lie is that we are the only ones facing our problem, this lie keeps us
locked in the prison of our addiction. We know that there is something wrong with
us, we know we need help, but we are embarrassed by our addiction, so we hide
it. That is until it overwhelms us and we go into, what I call, a death spiral.
The other big lie we face as addicts, is that I can win this battle on my own.
That may be true for a short period of time, but in the long haul, without help,
not only will we fail, but we will fall farther into our addiction.
I always recommend a group to deal with any addiction. There are plenty of
both Christian and non-christian groups that deal with addiction. I know that I
could not deal with my addiction without the help of a Christian group. The
important thing is to get help, because all addictions are abusive to the addict
and those around the addict.
Be careful as you begin to step away from your addiction, have those that
support you, watch for signs of trading one addiction for another addiction. If
you are prone to addiction, this is a real concern.
I know that for me, my Higher Power is Jesus Christ. Without Him in my life
and the support of my wife and family, I would be lonely and lost in my addiction.
Remember you are not alone in this struggle, there are people that you can talk to.
May God bless you and keep you as you deal with your addiction.
