To spend or not to spend, that is the question. As families, we face this
problem on a daily basis. When money is short, sometimes it's a choice of
which bills get paid. When there is extra, do we really need this or that,
Our homes are like any business organization, or better yet, any
partnership. We need the approval of both parties on important decisions.
If one partner is spending and the other partner doesn't know it, they both
can end up spending money they don't have. Discussions are a necessary
evil, especially in a home.
Most divorces are over money and lack of communication, though the
divorce papers may say unreconcilable differences. The continuous circle
of not talking and spending to feel better, then feeling guilty and not talking
can and will destroy a marriage. It doesn't matter whether you are rich and
famous or barely surviving, most divorces can be traced back to money and
communication breakdowns.
Occasionally, you will have an affair that creeps into a marriage, but the
table has already been set up, especially with the wife having the affair, by
a breakdown in communication. Men, if you are not communicating with
your spouse, she is communicating with someone else. Women, if you
aren't feeding your man's ego, someone else is.
That is not to say that there are not habitual cheaters, because there are,
but these are a rarity instead of the norm. In a marriage, we are to continually
build our spouse up. I have a friend, that is also a pastor, his favorite saying
about marriage is, the secret to a happy marriage is, trying to out submit for
your spouses good. If that is always the contest in your house, you will, most
likely have a happy home.
Don't let money and lack of conversation be a wedge between you and the
one you love. Sex, joy, happiness,... all come from following our Biblical
example, laid out by Jesus Christ and His Church. The church can never out
give God and God can never do enough for His People.
As always Love is the answer!
