This is not about Mary being anything other than, the mother of
Jesus. We know that Mary and Joseph had other children, but we
also know that mothers have a built in radar, a sixth sense, when it
comes to their children.
We read the story of Mary and Joseph taking Jesus to the Temple
at the age of twelve, and how Jesus astounded the teachers there.
We read about Jesus response, when his parents find Him in the
Temple, Jesus said He was doing His Father's business.
The next major thing we see with Mary is at a marriage feast,
the party has run short of wine and Mary asks Jesus to do something
to fix the problem. Though Jesus didn't say it this way, I can envision
a modern day child shrugging their shoulders and saying, "what am I
supposed to do about it."
Mary tells the servants to do whatever Jesus says, and the water is
turned into wine.
Mary knew the promise of God about her son, Jesus, was the
promised one, The Messiah. She watched as they marched Him
through the streets. She watched as not only her son, but the Son
of God, hung on that cross and slowly, tortuously suffocated to
death as Jesus strength gave way.
I have this feeling that Mary knew, or at least held out hope,
that there would be more to this story. Think of all the things that she
had witnessed in 33 years, with this man, we call the Christ. She
knew what God had promised about this child, she would carry.
She knew of His miracles, healing those afflicted with all manner
of maladies, raising Lazarus, the crowds this son of hers drew, but
she also knew of how badly the Jewish leaders wanted him dead.
She watched her son die, on that cross. But I can't imagine, she
wasn't expecting one more miracle. Mothers always have hope!
