Have you ever heard this: "You two fight like brothers."
Christianity has been fighting with itself, beginning with the early church
in Jerusalem. In fact our church hierarchy was designed to take care of
disagreements in the Body of Christ.
The Apostles, busy with spreading the Gospel, didn't have time for the
"minor conflict" of which Christian widows were fed better the Hellenist or
the Hebrew. So the Apostles appointed Deacons to take care of minor
disagreements in the church.
These battles have only gotten worse, as different denominations began
to propagate as a part of Christianity. We have done a terrible job of being
One Body for Christ.
Even in our denominations, there are sub-denominations. Churches have
split over everything you can think of: One Cup vs many cups, Sunday
School vs no Sunday School, whether the Pastor wears a suit, wears a tie,
or wears a robe, musical instruments, some musical instruments, no musical
instruments, etc.
When it comes to finding common ground, a beginning point of dialog,
Christians, much like society, would rather talk about our differences than
our commonalities.
Christianity taken back to the basics is a good place to start. Father, Son,
The Holy Spirit are our foundation for Christianity. Jesus death, burial, and
resurrection are necessities for our salvation. Acts 2:38 calls for believers to,
“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
This should be common ground for all Christian denominations. These
are necessary for our salvation through Jesus Christ. If we have these simple
things right, then our salvation is secure. This is common ground for all of
Christianity. This is the heart of Christianity, One Church, One Savior.
I like to refer to this as the Bridal Cake, since the church is the Bride of
Christ. Everything else in Christianity is icing and decorations, and it's
all right if we talk, debate, discuss, fight and argue over the icing and the
decorations.
Creation, evolution, the universe, science, the great flood, denominations,
and everything else that divides us are just icing and decorations for this life.
They will not be part of our eternal life. Heaven will not have designated zones
for Baptist, Catholic, Church of Christ, Creationist, Old Earth, musical, non-
musical, etc.
In the end, as The Bride (The Church), joins The Groom (Jesus Christ) there
will be One Bridal Cake, and the icing and the decorations will be beautiful,
but they won't matter as The Bride (The Church) stares into the eyes of the
Groom (Jesus Christ).
