Jesus, was born in Bethlehem, but grew up in Nazareth. That much is
certain, because scripture tells us.
What I want to talk about is a mixture of History, Conjecture, and a
little speculation on Jesus, and my vision of Him as a man, growing up.
I can't believe, with all that Jesus did and survived in this six foot,
blue eyed, skinny Jesus, that Hollywood puts out, time after time, and
movie after movie. For one six foot tall, blue eyed people in modern
day Israel are rare, much less back in Jesus time.
The average: height is 5'9", eye color most likely brown, hair color
black and curly, hair length short, to the collar, only long if following
a Nazarite vow like Sampson or John the Baptist. Jesus was from
Nazareth, but scripture doesn't tell us of a Nazarite vow, so most likely
Jesus had short curly hair.
Sons followed their Dad's in learning trades, so Jesus, like Joseph,
would be a carpenter. Carpenters in the first century, worked with
big pieces of lumber and cut them down to size, door posts were most
likely a 6"x 6", beams were most likely that big or bigger, while Jesus
may have learned some cabinetry, He most likely was used to moving
big, rough cut, lumber. If that's the case, Jesus would have been stocky,
with a muscular build, the body well defined, from the hard work.
We aren't sure when Joseph passed away, but we know Jesus had
brothers and sisters, and being the first born, after Joseph's death
Jesus would have been the bread winner in the family, most likely
doing carpentry until time to start His ministry.
I know we all have our own vision of Jesus, but I really believe
Hollywood missed the mark.
What does your picture of Jesus look like?
