In order to hit what you aim for, you have to keep your eye on the mark. The
mark may not be your ultimate target, but if you hit the mark you'll hit the target.
This is true in many sports, but also useable in life. On the sports side, your mark
might be a specific place to jump from, or a specific spot on the track to start your
sprint. In the pole vault, the specific mark you aim for, is the sweet spot to plant
your pole.
As a right handed pitcher in baseball, your mark is the back of a right hand batter,
if you are throwing a curve ball. That way it will break across the plate. For an out-
fielder throwing to home plate, the mark is the cut off man, who will turn and throw
to home plate.
In football, on offense, a quarter backs mark for a pass, is where the receiver will
be, when the ball gets to him. On defense, the mark is where the receiver is going
to catch the ball, because if you hit the receiver at the same time he is catching a ball,
the catch will be almost impossible to make.
What, you ask does this have to do with Christian living?
As we live each day, we need to have Christian goals for each day. A mark, if
you will to try and achieve. If we set marks for each day, we break life up into
manageable pieces to deal with each day. That is why Jesus tells us to live one day
at a time.
We, as people have no control over what is going to happen to us each day,
much less what someone else will do to us. Day to day is enough, our next heart
beat, our next breath is not promised to us. Only God knows what lies ahead for
each of us. Only God knows whether tomorrow will bring blessings or trials.
This day to day living, forces us to put our trust in God, though you and I like
to lie to ourselves, and pretend we are in control. Our trusting in God, allows us
to face the worst of circumstances, knowing God has complete control. This
trusting in God, is what has allowed missionaries for centuries to go into unknown
areas of the world. They know if they live or die, it is God's will. If it is their day
to die, they are headed to a better place.
There is a freedom in realizing that God is in control of everything.
Take the day off from worrying, and let God have control.
